- I know there's an art institute in San Francisco...I'm not sure about any closer to Sacramento. There may be other art schools that are closer to the area. All art schools require a portfolio submission of some sort. That would require some body of art work, not necessarily drawings. You'd want to find out the portfolio expectations from the school you're applying to, and build it based on that. I'd imagine there would be financial aid options avaliable. Art school is pretty expensive, and I can't imagine that they would expect all students who attend to pay the full amount without help. Though you are interested in art schools, don't rule out the option of majoring in art in the context of a university setting. I'm about to finish my undergrad work, and did a double major, one of the majors being art. It's great to learn art in the context of a university because it allows for a greater knowledge base to work within, and still allows for helpful and intelligent teachers. I had many great teachers, and many teachers who said it doesn't make sense to go to an art school for undergrad work. It's pretty pricy, and you can still get a good art education from a university. (Just some food for thought). Good luck with your searches!
- UC Davis has an Art Program and is located only 15 miles outside of Sacramento. You would have to have a portfolio in order to apply which would consist of drawings, photos, scuplture or other works of art. They do have a financial aid program, and there are alot of other art programs that give grants. You would have to contact the the school itself to see if they are still accepting applications. If they are not, you can always try a junior college so that you can prepare a portfolio and get an idea what direction you want to go with your art then transfer. Hope this helps.
