Why is it that the bigger the settlements the further apart they are?

Just something I'm stuck on for Geography. Why is it that large settlements are far apart from other settlements, but small settlements are near to other settlements?

  1. That's a rhetorical question. Of course if a settlement is large like a large state, it's boundaries are large so it is a bigger area between states on either side. If you're talking about city sizes what you said doesn't hold water. Many small towns out west are a hundred miles between towns, and in the northeast and other populated areas, large towns are almost on top of each other.
