The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) is encouraging participation in the 2026 AFL-CIO Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Civil & Human Rights Conference, scheduled to take place in Baltimore from January 15 to 18, 2026.

This year’s conference theme is “Honoring Our History – Fighting for Our Future.” According to organizers, the theme emphasizes the connection between the labor and civil rights movements and underscores the importance of learning from history to guide future actions. The event aims to provide a forum for discussions on labor rights and civil and human rights issues, while also celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy.

Participants will have opportunities to join expert-led discussions on topics such as collective bargaining rights, democracy, voting rights, and economic justice. The conference will feature workshops and breakout sessions designed to equip attendees with practical tools for organizing within their communities and workplaces. Organizers note that both union members and leaders can benefit from skill-building activities intended to foster alliances and encourage advocacy.

Alex Rias was recently named Director of Civil, Human, and Women’s Rights at the AFL-CIO. He will oversee this annual conference moving forward.

The event will be held at the Hilton Baltimore Inner Harbor at 401 W. Pratt St., Baltimore, Maryland. Organizers recommend booking accommodations early due to limited availability, with a negotiated rate of $219 per night for attendees. Conference programming starts on Thursday afternoon, January 15, 2026; hotel rooms are limited for arrivals on January 14.

Registration for the conference is now open.
