The Automobile Club of Southern California announced that gas prices in most Southern California areas rose by double digits for the second time this year during the week of August 28.
On August 28, 2025, the Automobile Club reported that the statewide average for self-serve regular gasoline was $4.59 per gallon, an increase of 10 cents from the previous week and three cents below last year’s price. The national average stood at $3.21, eight cents higher than the prior week and 15 cents lower than a year ago. Local averages included $4.61 in Los Angeles-Long Beach, $4.67 in San Diego, $4.58 on the Central Coast, $4.46 in Riverside, and $4.52 in Bakersfield, with weekly changes ranging from seven to 15 cents and year-over-year differences from seven cents lower to four cents higher.
According to the Automobile Club of Southern California, as of September 2, 2025, in Sacramento, the average price of regular gasoline was $4.57 per gallon. This was up from $4.53 a week ago and $4.50 a month ago but down from $4.70 last year; mid-grade averaged $4.82, premium $5.04, and diesel $5.18.
“Most of the recent price increases at the pump happened last weekend after a spike in Los Angeles wholesale gasoline prices due to some unplanned refinery maintenance,” said Auto Club spokesperson Doug Shupe via a press release. “Also, for the first time this year in some Southern California areas, pump prices are higher than they were on this date in 2024.”
The Automobile Club of Southern California is part of the American Automobile Association (AAA) national federation and provides services to members across multiple counties in California including Inyo, Imperial, Kern, Los Angeles, Mono, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Tulare, and Ventura. Founded in 1902 with about 1,500 members, AAA has expanded into a federation serving over 65 million members across North America with services such as roadside assistance and travel planning.
