The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has released new immunization guidance for the upcoming respiratory virus season. The recommendations are in line with those from West Coast Health Alliance partners, including Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii. According to CDPH, these steps are intended to ensure that Californians have continued access to vaccines and insurance coverage across pharmacies, clinics, and other health care providers.
State officials emphasize the importance of immunizations against COVID-19, influenza, and RSV. They note that vaccines are safe and effective tools for preventing disease and reducing the burden on health care systems during respiratory virus season.
Assembly Bill 144 was signed into law this week by Governor Gavin Newsom. The legislation ensures that CDPH’s vaccine recommendations will be guided by evidence-based input from organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). This approach is consistent with principles shared among members of the West Coast Health Alliance.
“Californians deserve clear, science-based recommendations and access to immunizations to protect themselves from vaccine-preventable disease. Changes to state law will maintain insurance coverage and ensure access to vaccines across pharmacies, clinics, and other health care providers,” said a statement from CDPH.
Officials say a major goal is maintaining accessibility for COVID-19, influenza, and RSV vaccines throughout the state in coordination with regional partners.
