The U.S. Census Bureau will begin an embargo of the 2024 American Community Survey (ACS) 1-year estimates starting September 9, 2025, at 10 a.m. Eastern Time. The public release of these data is scheduled for September 11.
The ACS is recognized as a key source of information on topics including language use, education, commuting patterns, employment status, mortgage and rent details, income levels, poverty rates, and health insurance coverage. For many local areas, it remains the only source for such detailed demographic and housing data.
The embargoed one-year estimates will be accessible to registered embargo subscribers beginning September 9 at 10 a.m. ET. Coverage includes all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, congressional districts, metropolitan statistical areas, and other geographic regions with populations exceeding 65,000.
According to the Census Bureau’s policy: “Wire and distribution services are prohibited from distributing embargoed news stories and data files before the public release date and time.” The embargo period concludes at 12:01 a.m. ET on September 11.
Full public access to the ACS data products—including tools on data.census.gov and summary files—will be available by September 11 at 10 a.m. ET. Those seeking early access during the embargo window can register through the Census Bureau’s website (https://www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/embargoed_releases).
