IAM Western Territory General Vice President Robert “Bobby” Martinez visited members of Local 1998 in Hawaii, emphasizing the importance of their work to both the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) and national defense.

Local 1998, which has represented workers since 1951, is a longstanding part of IAM’s presence in Hawaii. Over more than seventy years, it has contributed to the stability and growth of the union’s Western Territory. The local’s history reflects ongoing demand for strong union representation and the dedication of its members.

“Our Hawaiian members play a pivotal role in our union,” said GVP Martinez. “Their solidarity through cultural diversity is empowering and the role our members play in the name of national defense is felt from coast to coast.”

Martinez highlighted that Hawaii’s location makes Local 1998 particularly significant for economic and national interests. Members are involved in industries essential to infrastructure and defense, making their contributions vital not only at a local level but also for broader security operations.

Many Local 1998 members support national defense activities by applying their skills and expertise to ensure operational readiness. Martinez acknowledged their responsibilities and emphasized that strong union representation is necessary to protect their rights, secure fair contracts, and maintain safe working conditions.

The visit also showcased the diverse backgrounds within Local 1998. Martinez noted that this diversity strengthens both the local chapter and IAM as a whole: “unity across cultures and communities strengthens the IAM and enriches the entire Western Territory.” He pointed out that solidarity among members demonstrates IAM’s commitment to inclusivity.

During his trip, Martinez met with both members and leadership of Local 1998 to discuss priorities, address concerns, and plan future initiatives. His visit reinforced IAM’s effort to remain engaged with locals throughout its territory regardless of distance.
