The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Union announced on Mar. 26 the passing of Mary Allen Fones, a long-serving kitchen supervisor at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center. Fones died on March 15 at the age of 76.
Fones worked for 33 years in the kitchen at the Winpisinger Center, where she was known for her strong work ethic, dedication, and sense of humor. She began her career as a cook, advanced to kitchen leadperson, and became kitchen supervisor in 1995 before retiring in 2013. According to the union, she was one of the first three staff members hired at the center by former IAM International President William W. Winpisinger.
Her colleagues described her as someone who brought laughter into every shift and made lasting friendships with those around her. The IAM said that “Mary’s impact on the Winpinsinger Center is measured by all the laughs and smiles she gave our members and staff over her career,” according to IAM Union International President Brian Bryant. “She touched so many of our members’ lives with her lovable personality and cooking skills. Our union is better off for her many years of dedication and we send our deepest condolences to Mary’s loved ones.”
Fones was also recognized for sharing meals with family and friends, enjoying new foods, and especially liked nachos. Beyond work, she lived in Hollywood, Maryland throughout her life and supported local community events such as those held by the Moose lodge.
The union said flowers are welcome or memorial contributions can be made to Patuxent Moose Lodge in honor of Mary Fones.
