Mercury Insurance has announced a partnership with Liberty Mutual to provide coverage to thousands of California Safeco Insurance customers affected by changes in Liberty Mutual’s personal lines strategy.

According to the announcement, Liberty Mutual will advise its independent agents to transition impacted Safeco renters, condo, and select auto policies to Mercury. This move aims to maintain continuity for customers. Liberty Mutual Insurance, a Fortune 100 company with over 40,000 employees, offers property and casualty coverage worldwide and generates over $50 billion in annual revenue. Mercury will offer homeowners coverage in areas where other insurers have limited availability and has been selling insurance through independent agents for over 60 years.

In Sacramento, the average annual cost of homeowners’ insurance is approximately $1,237 or about $103 per month for a policy with $300,000 in dwelling coverage. This rate is lower than both the California state average of $1,383 and the national average of $1,754, according to a report by Policygenius.

MoneyGeek reports that in Sacramento, the average annual cost for full coverage car insurance is $1,817, while minimum coverage averages $858 per year.

“Mercury and Safeco have long had a healthy, competitive relationship, sharing a common desire to protect California consumers,” said Gabriel Tirador, CEO of Mercury. “When Safeco approached us with the idea of transitioning their impacted customers into our portfolio, we saw an opportunity for Mercury to be there for California consumers and agents when they need us most. The result is a win for everyone — their customers and agents, Safeco and Mercury.”

Mercury Insurance was founded in 1961 and is based in Brea, California. It provides coverage for auto, home, condo, renters, business insurance, and mechanical protection across 11 states through 6,340 independent agents and 15 offices. The company emphasizes affordable rates paired with comprehensive coverage and local agent support. Mercury also operates a Special Investigations Unit to combat insurance fraud and offers guaranteed vehicle repairs through authorized auto shops to support smooth claims resolution for policyholders. The company holds over $8.3 billion in assets and employs more than 4,200 people.
