Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is offering free in-home gas safety checks as colder weather approaches. The company will also provide pilot light re-lighting services for customers whose heaters or appliances have been turned off during warmer months.
These safety checks are intended to ensure that gas appliances such as water heaters, furnaces, and ovens are functioning safely and efficiently. The initiative aims to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning in homes. Carbon monoxide is a hazardous gas that cannot be detected by sight, smell, or sound.
Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that more than 400 people in the United States die each year from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning not related to fires. Additionally, over 100,000 people visit emergency rooms annually, with more than 14,000 requiring hospitalization due to carbon monoxide exposure. PG&E has responded to over 6,000 suspected carbon monoxide incidents since the beginning of 2025.
“This complimentary safety program is a great way for customers to prepare for increased use of their natural gas appliances this winter. A team member will inspect all gas appliances to ensure proper functionality and perform pilot re-lights. Scheduling a free gas safety check is a benefit PG&E proudly provides our customers to ensure their safety and comfort,” said Jeff Janvier, PG&E Gas Operations Lead.
PG&E encourages customers to schedule an inspection before winter when natural gas appliances are used most frequently. Appointments can be made online at www.pge.com/pilotlights or by calling 800-743-5000.
The company also advises that if anyone suspects carbon monoxide in their home, they should leave immediately and call 911. If there is a smell of natural gas—a “rotten egg” odor—customers should evacuate and then contact both 911 and PG&E at 1-800-743-5000.
PG&E serves over 16 million people across Northern and Central California as a combined natural gas and electric utility. More information about its services can be found at pge.com and pge.com/news.
