Sacramento State and California State University recognized four individuals for their contributions to public service, law, health care, and academia in ceremonies held on April 24 and May 1. The announcement was made on May 4.
The awards highlight the impact these leaders have had on the campus community, the broader university system, and society at large. Since 1963, California State University has awarded honorary degrees to those whose work has benefitted humanity, local communities, or individual campuses.
Anh Phoong, founder and CEO of Phoong Law, received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Garry Maisel, CEO emeritus of Western Health Advantage, was honored with an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. Elizabeth G. Hill, retired legislative analyst for the state of California, also received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree.
In addition to these honorary degrees, Professor Emeritus Ayad Al-Qazzaz from the Sociology department was presented with this year’s President’s Medal for Distinguished Service. The award is given to community members who have provided outstanding service to Sacramento State, higher education as a whole, or contributed significantly to the common good.
The honorees were celebrated during special receptions recognizing their achievements and ongoing influence within their fields as well as in higher education.
