The City of Sacramento announced on April 3 that it will observe “Arts, Culture, & Creativity Month” this April with a series of public events organized by the Office of Arts and Culture.
Arts, Culture, & Creativity Month is a statewide initiative led by California for the Arts. Now in its eighth year, the month aims to highlight the role that arts and culture play in communities across California.
This year’s theme is “Boundless Culture & Creativity,” with a subtheme of “Building Joy, Action + Power.” Organizers say these themes reflect how creative expression impacts civic life and helps foster social well-being and freedom of expression. Public celebrations are planned to showcase how art can promote belonging and help communities envision a more just future.
“Arts and culture are an essential part of what makes Sacramento a vibrant and connected community,” said Jason Jong, cultural and creative economy manager. “Arts, Culture, & Creativity Month is an opportunity to recognize and support local artists and creatives while highlighting the role they play in shaping Sacramento’s identity and future.”
Events scheduled throughout April include mentor artist speaker series sessions featuring Larry G. Meeks; the CA Arts & Culture Summit; California Arts Council 50th Anniversary Awards Ceremony; Arts Advocacy Day; as well as artist talks featuring Matthew Flores and Ene Osteraas-Contable.
The Office of Arts and Culture also plans to relaunch its artlook Sacramento platform at the end of April. The online tool connects arts educators, organizations, teaching artists with schools, allowing users to search offerings by discipline or age group. More details about this relaunch will be shared later.
Last year saw the launch of another digital resource: The Public Art GIS Mapping Tool allows residents to explore information about dozens of public artworks around Sacramento through an interactive map designed to make city art more accessible.
