The City of Sacramento is encouraging residents to spend time outdoors and connect with their community as part of National Day of Play, which will be observed on Saturday, March 21.
National Day of Play was established following a bipartisan resolution introduced by U.S. Representative Ami Bera. The resolution designates the first Saturday after the spring equinox as a day dedicated to outdoor, device-free activities. The initiative aims to address concerns about social isolation and sedentary lifestyles by promoting time spent in nature and with others.
Earlier this week, the Sacramento City Council presented a resolution recognizing National Day of Play. Mayor Pro Tem Eric Guerra led the effort, emphasizing the city’s commitment to fostering healthy and connected communities. The Department of Youth, Parks, & Community Enrichment (YPCE) plays a key role in supporting these goals by offering various opportunities for residents to participate.
“National Day of Play is a reminder that some of the most important connections happen when we step away from our screens and spend time together,” said YPCE Director Jackie Beecham. “During the pandemic, our parks became essential spaces where people could safely gather, and they continue to serve as vital community hubs for residents of all ages. This is an opportunity to get outside, reconnect and experience everything our public spaces have to offer.”
Sacramento offers more than 240 parks, parkways, open spaces, and 15 community centers throughout the city. According to city leaders, 84% of Sacramento residents live within a ten-minute walk of a park—higher than the national average for urban areas.
City officials encourage everyone to take advantage of local resources during National Day of Play as an opportunity for recreation and building stronger community ties.
