The City of Sacramento announced on Mar. 27 that residents and local groups can apply for up to $800 in reimbursements to support neighborhood cleanups and green waste removal on public property. The Recycling and Solid Waste Division will also cover the cost of waste disposal for approved projects.

This initiative aims to help community organizations already engaged in cleanup efforts by reducing their expenses, while encouraging new groups to form. Jesa David, spokesperson for the Recycling and Solid Waste Division, said, “We created this program to provide funding for groups who were already doing community cleanups and mainly needed help with disposal. We wanted to help offset cleanup costs to help those existing groups further their impact, as well as encourage individuals to create their own cleanup groups.”

Eligible applicants include neighborhood associations, homeowners’ associations, nonprofit organizations, religious groups, service clubs, and similar entities. Groups that are not formally organized are encouraged to partner with an eligible organization before applying. Individuals or for-profit entities do not qualify but may join or organize a group if they wish to participate.

Funds can be used toward supplies such as gloves, trash bags, protective gear, and refreshments (up to 20% of the total funding). All cleanups must occur on public rights-of-way—such as city parks, streets, alleyways or sidewalks—and cannot take place outside city limits or on private property or waterways.

Community organizations may submit applications for up to three events per fiscal year. Applications are noncompetitive and accepted year-round but must be submitted at least 30 days before the planned event date. Once received, staff from the Recycling and Solid Waste Division will review each application and follow up with additional questions if necessary; successful applicants will receive instructions about next steps.
