The school issued a safety reminder on Apr. 14 to its community, urging students, parents, and drivers to be vigilant when traveling to and from the campus.
The notice highlights the importance of pedestrian and driver awareness in maintaining safety around school zones. The message is intended to prevent accidents involving students who walk, cycle, or drive near the school.
According to the statement, cyclists and pedestrians are advised to cross streets only at marked intersections and remain alert for traffic. The school cautions that “Don’t always assume a car sees you, or will come to a full stop.” It also encourages traveling in groups when possible and reporting any suspicious individuals who may cause concern.
Drivers are reminded that roads surrounding the school buildings are designated as school zones with posted speed limits—typically 25 miles per hour—and should be treated with extra caution. The statement emphasizes that “Extreme care needs to be taken when driving where children can be distracted from danger,” especially during times when children are present.
Additionally, new daylighting laws now prohibit parking within 20 feet of marked or unmarked crosswalks. This regulation aims to improve visibility for both drivers and pedestrians since “students, especially those on bikes and other wheeled devices, can pop up suddenly behind a vehicle into the street.” The notice urges everyone to model safe behavior by crossing at marked pathways even if roads appear empty: “Children may not only be following your lead, they may be literally following your path behind you.”
The message concludes by encouraging all members of the community: “Let’s build a culture of safety, thank you.”
