Sacramento City Unified School District announced on April 27 that families can now apply for district permits for the 2026–2027 school year. The application window is open until May 15 at 5:00 p.m., allowing parents to request enrollment at a school other than their assigned neighborhood campus or, for those living outside SCUSD boundaries, to seek entry into the district.
The permit process gives families options regarding their children’s education by offering both intra-district and inter-district permits. Intra-district permits are available to those residing within SCUSD who wish their child to attend a different school from their designated neighborhood one. Inter-district permits are intended for families outside of SCUSD who want to enroll in an SCUSD school. To do so, applicants must obtain and upload an approved Inter-District Transfer Permit from their home district during the application period.
Applications should be submitted through SchoolMint, where supporting documents can also be uploaded. The district notes that there is no priority given to early submissions; all applications received within the window will be considered equally.
Families interested in learning more about participating schools by grade level, frequently asked questions, or exploring programs and care options can visit the District Permit website and use resources like SchoolFinder.
Lottery notifications will be sent via SchoolMint on May 26. For transitional kindergarten, due to high demand in the TK Lottery, district permit requests are not being accepted at this time; in-district families may apply through general registration starting May 18 instead. Those registering kindergartners within district boundaries are encouraged to register at their neighborhood school as a backup if not selected through the lottery.
Questions about permits or transfers can be directed to the Permits & Transfers webpage or addressed with assistance from the Enrollment Center.
