SMUD has announced that it is prepared for the upcoming winter storm expected to bring precipitation and strong winds through the holiday period. The utility stated that its crews are ready to restore power in case of outages caused by the weather.

“When storms knock out power, SMUD works around-the-clock to restore electric service safely and quickly,” according to the company. Customers are encouraged to report outages using the SMUD app or by visiting smud.org/outages, where they can also monitor outage causes and estimated restoration times.

The company noted that line crews, troubleshooters, and other field personnel are on standby to respond to storm-related outages. SMUD emphasized its year-round preparation efforts, which include regular equipment maintenance and tree trimming near power lines. However, severe wind and rain can still result in branches falling onto lines and causing outages.

SMUD highlighted its status as a community-owned electric service provider serving Sacramento County for over 75 years. In 2024, about 62% of its power supply was carbon free—a figure influenced by weather conditions and hydroelectric output. The utility aims to eliminate all carbon from its electricity production by 2030 while maintaining reliability and keeping rates low—reportedly averaging 50% less than those of neighboring investor-owned utilities. More information about SMUD’s Zero Carbon Plan is available at smud.org.
