Snap Inc. said on April 3 that its recent announcement about renaming Spotlight to “Reals” was an April Fools’ joke, and the platform will keep its original name.
The company explained that while the name change was not real, it wanted to highlight the importance of authentic content shared by its community. Snap Inc. said it is focusing on promoting original videos created with the Snapchat camera and reducing synthetic artificial intelligence videos or syndicated posts.
“We’ve always believed that what makes Spotlight special is the authenticity of what you see–content made by and for our community–like candid moments, spontaneous reactions, and everyday experiences shared by real people across Snapchat, from Snapchatters to Snap Stars,” the company said in a statement. The platform reported strong growth in user engagement, especially in the United States. According to Snap Inc., creators who post daily to Spotlight are growing their followers more than ten times faster than those who do not.
In addition, Snap Inc. reported that in the fourth quarter of 2025, Snapchat reached 474 million daily active users and 946 million monthly active users worldwide. The number of creators posting to Spotlight in the U.S. grew nearly fifty percent year-over-year during this period.
Snap Inc. said it will continue investing in Spotlight by building tools and experiences for creators and users to share original content more easily and grow their presence on the platform.
The company concluded: “So while Spotlight isn’t becoming ‘Reals,’ the spirit of it–keeping things real–is here to stay, and it’s easier than ever for Snapchatters to grow, build an audience, and go viral on Spotlight.”
