Snap Inc. announced on Apr. 8 that its Topic Chats feature saw significant activity during the recent March Madness basketball tournament, with the #marchmadness chat becoming one of the most active real-time group conversations on Snapchat.

The development highlights how users are increasingly seeking shared, live experiences around major cultural events, rather than interacting through scattered posts or private messages. According to Snap Inc., tens of thousands of fans joined the public, moderated chat to react together as games unfolded.

The company said that by the Final Four round of the tournament, what stood out was not only the number of participants but also their behavior. Instead of posting reactions across different feeds or comment sections, fans gathered in a single space to share their thoughts and celebrate key moments in real time.

“Topic Chats offered a more communal, synchronous way to experience a live event, closer to watching the game together than just posting about it after the fact,” Snap Inc. said in its statement.

Snap Inc. added that this activity demonstrates “there’s real appetite for focused, real-time conversation around major cultural moments, especially when those spaces feel intentional, focused around shared passions, and well-moderated.” The company noted that while March Madness has ended for this year, the collective energy and participation seen in Topic Chats represents a new way for fans to connect.
