Sutter Health hospitals in Northern California have received top honors from Healthgrades in its 2026 Specialty Excellence Awards, with particular recognition for orthopedic and joint care.

Healthgrades evaluates more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide each year, analyzing risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates for over 30 common conditions and procedures. This process helps identify leading hospitals in various specialties and provides patients with data to make informed decisions about their care.

Sutter Health earned 120 five-star ratings for clinical performance across multiple specialties. Three of its hospitals—Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento; Novato Community Hospital; and Santa Rosa Regional Hospital—were named among America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Orthopedic Care. Additionally, Mills-Peninsula Medical Center, Sutter Medical Center Sacramento, and Novato Community Hospital were recognized as America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement.

“Delivering high quality, safe and innovative care is our hallmark and the foundation of all we do,” said Dr. Bill Isenberg, chief medical and quality officer at Sutter Health. “We consistently deliver top-tier care, designed to meet each patient’s unique needs. Our goal is to maximize patients’ health, well-being and quality of life.”

Sutter Health is working to expand access to specialty services within local communities by increasing physician training efforts and integrating clinical research into patient care. The organization plans significant growth over the next decade to address healthcare access challenges and close existing gaps in care. By the end of 2025, Sutter will have added more than 160 hospital beds and expects to open 27 new ambulatory care centers by 2027.

Efforts are also underway to better connect advanced services such as cancer treatment, heart and vascular care, orthopedics and sports medicine, neuroscience, urgent care, diagnostic imaging, behavioral health, organ therapies, women’s health, and pediatrics across its network.

“We want every patient at Sutter to receive the same level of exceptional care, regardless of where they access treatment,” said Keegan Kirby, registered nurse and vice president of Sutter’s Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Service Line. “To realize our mission that puts patients first, our clinical service lines support physicians and care teams with tools that support consistently delivered, elite care.”
