The U.S. Census Bureau has released updated statistics on state-to-state migration and place of birth for 2024. The data provides estimates on the movement of people between all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and from abroad to the United States.

The new information is available in two table packages. The first package, State-to-State Migration Flows, details how many people moved between different states and territories as well as international arrivals. The second package, State of Residence by Place of Birth, offers figures on where people currently live based on their place of birth.

These statistics are drawn from the 2024 American Community Survey (ACS) 1-year estimates. The ACS is an annual survey conducted by the Census Bureau that collects demographic, social, economic, and housing information from households across the country. More details about the ACS can be found at https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/acs.

According to a statement from the Census Bureau: “Geographic mobility refers to the movement of people within and across boundaries.”

There was no separate news release issued with this update; it was provided as a tip sheet.
