The U.S. Census Bureau released new tables and files on Apr. 15 containing detailed information from the 2025 Annual Survey of State Government Tax Collections, which includes data on taxes imposed and collected by state governments and the District of Columbia.

The release provides a comprehensive overview of tax activity across five main categories and up to 25 subcategories, offering a resource for those interested in public finance.

According to the Census Bureau, these data are used by Congress, federal agencies, state and local governments, educational institutions, research organizations, and the general public to examine tax policy as well as develop gross domestic product estimates and national income accounts.

Additional details about the survey can be found in its technical documentation. The Census Bureau said that no formal news release is associated with this product; instead, it was issued as a tip sheet.
