The latest Livability Poll conducted by Valley Vision highlights the key issues affecting residents in California’s Capital Region. The annual survey, carried out between mid-June and mid-July 2025, included responses from 1,273 individuals across Sacramento, El Dorado, Placer, Sutter, Yolo, and Yuba counties. With a margin of error of ±2.7%, the poll provides insights into how residents perceive life in their communities.
Affordable housing remains the top concern for most people in the region. Many respondents said it is becoming more difficult to buy a home or plan for retirement locally. There is support for increased housing development compared to previous years; however, opinions are divided on whether new homes should be built within existing communities or in undeveloped areas.
Access to healthcare has become a higher priority this year, reflecting worries about affordability and changes in federal policy. Residents expressed anxiety over potential cuts to health and human services funding while showing support for tax reductions.
Livable wages rank as another significant issue. While financial stability appears to be improving for some residents, disparities persist—especially among urban populations and communities of color who report greater uncertainty regarding job security and career advancement. The rise of artificial intelligence is also causing concern about future employment opportunities.
Education remains an important topic, with perspectives differing based on geography, race, ethnicity, and income.
Despite these challenges, many people continue to view the Capital Region positively as a place to live and raise children. Respondents value diversity, natural amenities such as parks and access to nature, supportive services, and community spirit.
Valley Vision convened more than 350 local leaders and community members at its recent Livability Summit in Citrus Heights to discuss these findings and explore solutions. Attendees participated in workshops covering workforce development, affordable housing strategies, climate resilience measures, federal policy impacts, and ways to foster community engagement.
“The Livability Poll is a reflection of how people experience life in our region – their security, opportunity, and sense of belonging,” said Evan Schmidt, CEO of Valley Vision. “This year’s findings make it clear that housing, wages, and healthcare remain at the heart of what matters most. People want to see progress on the fundamentals that make life in our communities possible and sustainable.”
The poll aims to inform policymakers and guide collaborative action toward building a more inclusive economy that benefits all residents across the six-county area.
