The town of Windsor in Sonoma County has recently gained attention for its resilience, having narrowly avoided major damage from the Kincade fire due to the efforts of firefighters. Known for its approachable atmosphere and walkable Old Downtown filled with shops and restaurants, Windsor is described by online magazine 7X7 as “a charming, Mr. Rogers–level friendly pocket of Sonoma County that has all the wine country essentials (plus lots of beer) without crowds or a trace of snobbery.”
Windsor’s craft beer scene is highlighted by the opening of a Russian River Brewing outpost earlier this year. This location is one of only a few places where visitors can try the annual February release of Pliny the Younger, a triple IPA. The brewpub features a one-acre beer garden, tours, an extensive food menu, and offers Pliny the Elder on tap throughout the year. Other local breweries include Barrel Brothers Brewing, known for its creatively named beers such as The Snozzberries Taste Like Snozzberries, and Cuver Brewing, which focuses on Belgian-style beers with some California influences.
For wine enthusiasts, Sonoma-Cutrer Vineyards offers guided tastings and opportunities to walk through vineyard paths. Visitors can also play croquet on well-kept lawns while sampling Chardonnay and Pinot Noir paired with cheese and charcuterie.
Accommodation options in Windsor include the Holiday Inn Express Windsor, which 7X7 called “the nicest Holiday Inn you’ll ever stay in… and it’s a steal,” making it a budget-friendly choice for travelers.
Dining options range from Kin’s fried-pickle Frickles to Sweet T’s smoked meats and key lime pie martinis. Sweet T’s relocated to Windsor after being destroyed in the 2017 Tubbs fire. KC’s American Kitchen was described as “the Cheers of Windsor,” offering large breakfasts such as Benedicts served atop potato pancakes.
